Obituary - Hugh Carre

Hello Glenmore members,

It is with much sadness that I inform you of the passing longtime Glenmore member HUGH CARRE. He passed away on Sunday at the Jewish General from complications from a stroke last July, and then more recently colitis and C-difficile.
Hugh was a gentle soul and always had a smile on his face, and his favorite greeting of "Hey sport!" will be dearly missed around the club.

Visitation will be held on Sunday January 29 from 12 noon to 2pm, with a service to follow, at the Rideau Gardens on Sources, just north of the curling club.

Our sincerest sympathies to Hugh's family.

For those who knew them...his wife Lil passed away last spring. They both always had smiles and jokes for all who were fortunate to know them. He called Lil "the supervisor" and deep down inside I believe Heaven now has two very active Supervisor Angels hard at work and side by side per usual."

TEAM FELIX ASSELIN - QUEBEC JUNIOR PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Glenmore's Junior boys team of Felix Asselin, Marc-Alexandre Dion (Trois-Rivieres), Lewis South, and Sami-Guimond Jaber and coach Benoit Forget for winning the prestigious Quebec Junior Provincial title!

The event took place in Val D'Or, and the boys were perfect all week long winning all their games, and the championship!

They now move on to the Canadian Junior Championships taking place February 4-12, 2012 in Napanee ON.

CONGRATULATIONS!! JOB WELL DONE!!

Dickie Young - In the hospital

Over the Christmas holiday, he was taken to the Jewish General for surgery to repair an artery.

He is currently in ICU and recovering from the surgery.

I am running a marathon as a participant of Team In Training on October 16th.

To help raise funds, I will be having a BBQ event at Glenmore on SATURDAY AUGUST 20th, 2011.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to help fund research to find new treatments and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and provide critical education and support to patients and families battling these cancers.

I would like to get Glenmore members out to participate, there will be doorprizes and raffles, and the cost is $10.

Team Fong Qualifies for Dominion Provincials

Congrats to the team of Stan Fong, Mike Whittingham, Benoit Forget, and Mike Kennedy for qualifying for the Dominion Curling provincials to be held in Quebec City in October 2011.

The Montreal regionals were held the weekend of April 15-17, 2011 at Boucherville Curling Club. Team Fong of Glenmore was one of three teams that qualified from the 14-team field.

On the ladies side, Team Laura Thomas gave it their best shot, but lost a close extra end game in the B-side semi-final qualifier.

We came up a bit short of our lofty goal of $200,000 on Saturday, March 26, but it's not too late! Each curling club has been "challenged" by Pointe-Claire's Bruce Lerner to raise an extra $2000 to reach our goal!

What this translates to is 100 people giving $20 each. I know for a fact that Glenmore is well on its way to reach that "100" number.

I'm happy to announce the annual fundraiser bonspiel Kurling For Kids was another huge success!

Over 600 curlers and 11 curling clubs took part in the great event, and we were able to raise a whopping $181,000!!!

JUNIOR BOYS TEAM ASSELIN WINS MEN'S EVENT

Press release --> LENNOXVILLE, March 20, 2011 -YOUTH CONQURES TRADITION AND TAKES THE NICHOL TROPHY - Sixteen-year-old Felix Asselin and his team from the Glenmore Curling Club topped 27 other teams to win the 2011 Lennoxville Men�s Invitational Bonspiel held from March 13-19 at the Lennoxville Curling Club. Claude Vall�e and his team from the Sherbrooke Curling Club won the �B� event, while Remi Verville also from Sherbrooke Curling Club claimed the �C� event. On the senior side, it was Bertrand Lessard from Sherbrooke Curling Club winning the �A� event, while Jim Ransehousan of North Hatley Curling Club took home the �B� side. It was the 79th year that the Nichol Trophy was competed for as top prize in the Lennoxville Men�s Invitational Bonspiel. With Asselin winning, he and his two younger teammates become the youngest ever to have their name inscribed on it. Joining the trio was Asselin�s father and coach who threw lead stones and provided a few tips to the �kids� as they were known throughout the competition.

Asselin�s team took an interesting route to the finals, beating three former champions, including a semi-final game that saw seven straight blank ends before they were able to steal the victory in the eighth end. Again in the final it was a steal in the eighth end to force an extra, then a fantastic shot on his last through a port in the extra end to secure the victory over Mathieu Drapeau and his Celanese squad who had a great run of their own. Drapeau knocked off defending champion Shawn Fowler from Danville Curling Club in the semi-final.

TEAM MOORCROFT finishes in 1st place after round-robin!

Team Gail Moorcroft with Nancy Harvey, Lee Sleno, Dawn Sheppard, and Lynne Meacher went 4-1 after the round robin and has finished first in their division.

They now go on to the A1-B1 game with the winner going to the finals!!

Besides her spouse, she is survived by her mother Madeleine B�langer (Jean-Charles and the late Roger Gagn�), her brothers Marc (Sylvie), Pierre (Charlotte) and Raynald, her brothers-in-law Michael (Jeannette), Kreshimir and Zed Freud (Vicki), her sisters-in-law Diane Labrie, Nicole Maheux and Vera (Georges) Borgeaud as well as her nephews and nieces Yannick (M�lanie), Simon (Karine), Jean-Francois (Vanessa) and Karina (Eric) and Jean-Martin Gagn�, Ivan (Natalia), Patrick (Tracy), Wendi and Stefan Freud and Jessica Borgeaud (Yves). A Glenmore team skipped by Greg Sleno scored the very rare 8-ender in the Master�s Circuit �A� Semi-final on Saturday, Jan 8th, 2011 at Boucherville.
The team of Skip-Greg Sleno 3rd-Mac Baines 2nd-Marc-Andre Bouchard (St. Lambert) and Lead-Phil Knox managed the feat!

Team Lawton Qualifies for Men's Provincials

TEAM DAVIES RAISES $1500

Winning Weekend for Glenmore

This was a big weekend for Glenmore curlers!

- Juvenile boys team Felix Asselin, Marc-Alexandre Dion, Lewis South, and Sami Guimond-Jaber won the juvenile boys section at the Longue-Pointe Junior/Juvenile Bonspiel. The proud coach is Benoit Forget.

Congratulations to Team Felix Asselin, Marc-Alexandre Dion, Lewis South, and Sami Guimond-Jaber for capturing a prestigious junior/juvenile event, Tournoi Junior/Juv�nile de Qu�bec (6e �dition), this past weekend Nov 5-7. The boys won ALL five of their games to capture the title.

They are the team to beat in the province for the juvenile division.

Team Fournier wins "A" in Valleyfield Open

Congratulations to Glenmore's Team Mike Fournier, Tom Wharry, Derek Lockwood and Kevin Ross for winning the Valleyfield Open event this past weekend Nov 5-7, 2010. The team had a bit of a twist this weekend with Tom skipping and Mike playing 3rd. We think it was to give Tom a bit of a break from all that sweeping! :lol: The team won $1140 for their efforts. Way to go!

In addition, Team Fred Lawton captured the "C" title with Daniel Gilbert, Ben Vezeau and Martin Lavoie. Good going!

Glenmore's Team Mike Fournier Reaches Semi's at Lac Leamy

Congratulations to Glenmore's Team Mike Fournier, Tom Wharry, Derek Lockwood, Mike Kennedy, and alternate Scott Hill for their semi-final performance at this weekend's Challenge Casino Lac Leamy!

This bonspiel featured 28 top teams from across Eastern Canada, including Jean-Michel Menard and Brad Gushue. Only 8 teams qualified for the playoffs in this triple knockout tournament, with the winner getting a berth in the Canada Cup in December 2010.

Team Mike Fournier qualified for the playoffs by beating teams such as Martin Ferland of QC and James Grattan of NB.

Their quarter-final game was played against none other than Olympic Gold medalist Brad Gushue, with Randy Ferbey, Mark Nichols and Randy Fry. It was a very exciting game, and Team Fournier played great and won 6-4 over Gushue!

The semi-final pitted Fournier against Brier winner Jean-Michel Menard, and it came down to the 8th end, and Team Fournier played an amazing game but lost by inches, 6-5.

The team won $4500 for their efforts!

Routledge and Co. rattled off eight straight victories � all of which were loser-out games � to claim her first of three Quebec championships, and earn a berth in the Canadian junior championships in St. Catherines, Ont.

Obituary - Jason Muise

Fellow Glenmore members,

It is with sadness that I announce the passing of one of our members, Jason Muise, following a long battle with cancer. Jason passed away last Friday night, July 2nd.

The visitation is Saturday, July 10th from 8:00 AM - 1:30 PM at Collins Clarke Funeral Home on Cartier Ave and Hwy 20.

The funeral mass will follow at St. Thomas a Becket Church at 2 p.m.

On behalf Glenmore, our sincerest condolences go to Jason's family.

Jason Muise in Palliative Care

Fellow Glenmore members,

One of our members, Jason Muise, has been admitted to the West Island Palliative Care Residence which is located behind the Lakeshore General Hospital.

Jason has been a member of Glenmore for several years, and took to the sport of curling very quickly, and played whenever and with whomever he could, and was called upon to spare quite often!

As for visiting Jason, it is best to call there first as he cannot really speak well so his mom usually answers the phone. She would let people know if it would be okay to visit as visits are quite tiring for him, but he enjoys them all the same. His mom makes sure that the visits are spaced out.

If people would like to visit, they can contact Kendra Griffiths at k_g@videotron.ca and she will give you the phone number.

Glenmore's Lady Masters team finishes 4th at Nationals!

The Lady Masters team skipped by Lois Baines with third Mary-Anne Robertson, second Claire McDougall and lead Joan McNabb finished fourth out of 12 provincial representatives from across Canada. Competing in the national final at the Thistle-St Andrews Curling Club in St. John New Brunswick, they competed against several former provincial champions. They finished the dual round robin format with two wins and three losses, narrowly missing the championship round for teams placed first or second in each division. The Quebec representatives qualified third in their division and won their next two games against the other third place team from Northern Ontario and defeated British Columbia, the loser of the 3 vs 4 page playoff game, in the final. This novel format provided all the teams with extra games to determine overall standings while the finals were completed and was enthusiastically appreciated by all the curlers. Normally at national finals, once the top 3 or 4 teams are selected for the page playoff finals, the other teams either watch the final rounds or go sight-seeing and some choose to change their flights so they can return home early. Almost all the teams chose to stay to play and party with the other competitors and support the event. The Quebec team appreciated the support of their clubs, Glenmore and Pointe Claire and Lois and Mary-Anne particularly want to thank Glenmore and all its members for their financial support for teams competing in national competitions. As not all provinces and territories were represented in the Masters, this national competition is not supported by the Canadian Curling Association and so they do not pay for travel or accommodations. Curling Quebec provides a portion of the Masters competition fees as support to the provincial Masters representatives and the competitors must raise the remainder themselves. However, as you could imagine, the experience was priceless.

Congrats to the Glenmore juvenile girls team of Lisa Davies, Alison Davies, Meaghan Hamelin and Kelly Ryan, with coach Jo-Ann McKeown for capturing the juvenile girls provincial title this past weekend at Montreal West. The girls went undefeated winning each section - A, B and C!!

By capturing the title, the Davies team will represent Quebec at the CANADA GAMES to be held next year!

The trophies keep piling up! Congrats to Glenmore's Nancy Harvey, Germaine Olson, Cecile Gravel and Eva Shepherd for capturing the the LCA Coronation Trophy! The event was played at Pointe-Claire, and Glenmore defeated the two-time defending champions from Lachine. Glenmore had to win 4 games in order to capture the title. Congratulations ladies!

Glenmore Teams Qualify for Mixed Provincials

Both teams qualified at the regionals held in Boucherville.

Glenmore has two more teams vying for two more spots - Team Daniel Gilbert and Team Vlad Freud. Good luck to both teams, who will be playing their finals in Baie D'Urfe on Saturday, March 13.

GLENMORE WINS THE HAMILTON SHIELD - FILLIES

This is an LCA (Ladies Curling Association) competition that is open to female curlers with 7 years or less of curling experience! The Glenmore team captured the title on Sunday, Feb 28th in Ormstown.

They now move on to the championship final stage to take place at Valleyfield on Sunday March 7th!

The annual le Milieu junior bonspiel was held at Glenmore from February 5 to 7. One of the highlights of the junior circuit, it was a great turnout with 20 teams, and GLENMORE teams were hugely successful! The Glenmore junior girls team of Lisa Davies, Alison Davies, Meaghan Hamelin, and Kelly Ryan, with coach Jo-Ann Mckeown won the juvenile girls section �A�, going 5 wins and zero losses and taking a big 2 points in the final game to win! Way to go!!
The Glenmore junior boys� team of Ian South, F�lix Asselin, Lewis South and Sami Guimond-Jaber with coach Benoit Forget won the consolation final for the juvenile boys section!

GLENMORE WINS LADY TWEEDSMUIR

The winning continues for Glenmore!

Congratulations to the Glenmore ladies for capturing their 2nd Lady Tweedsmuir championship in the last 4 years. The Lady Tweedsmuir is a two-team event, similar to the men's Governor Generals, where the points of both games count towards the winner.

Glenmore played Valleyfield in the Quebec finals held at Hudson Whitlock.

The Glenmore teams were: Nancy Harvey, Gail Moorcroft, Lee Sleno, and Lynne Meacher on one team, and Ruth Downard, Anne Patterson, Germaine Olson and Cecile Gravel on the other team.

The finals were hotly contested as the games actually went to 12 ends due to the unique format. The total scores for the games were tied after 10 and 11 ends, and Glenmore pulled it out in 12!

The Glenmore ladies now move on to the finals vs Ontario to be held in Ottawa, where they will actually meet and greet with the Governor General herself!

Congrats to the winners!

The road to the Brier just got one step closer for some members of Glenmore this past weekend!

In the Montreal regionals, Team MIKE FOURNIER, with DWAYNE FOWLER, DEREK LOCKWOOD and MIKE KENNEDY won the "A" section and qualified for the provincials.

Winning the "B" section was Team Michel Briand, with Dan Gregoire, Glenmore's YVES LANTHIER, and Yves Patenaude.

Also qualifying for the men's provincials was Team Steven Munroe, with Glenmore's MARTIN ROY, Erik Lachance, and Jean-Michel Arsenault out of the Quebec City region.

Congrats to all of our Glenmore curlers for qualifying!

Team Tom Wharry is still alive in the "C" and will play on Saturday, Jan 16th at 10:00AM. in one semi-final.

Big Weekend for Glenmore!

Congratulations to the women's team of Chantal Osborne for capturing the Circuit Provincial finals, and gaining a berth at the women's provincials this year. The team features Glenmore members Joelle Belley and Agnes Lanthier! Filling in on Sunday also was spare Tracey Strunga from Glenmore.
Special mention to the junior team of Alanna Routledge who played in the finals! Congrats girls! Your curling future is bright indeed.

On the men's side, Glenmore's Tom Wharry was also a finalist, but lost out to Martin Ferland. Tom's team did manage to win $3000 for their efforts. Also qualifying on the men's side was Glenmore's Mike Fournier, who lost their quarter-final game. They won $1250 for their weekend of play.

And on the junior scene, Team Lisa Davies captured one of the major circuit junior events this past weekend in Quebec City! Congrats girls! Way to go!

Tean Wharry in the Mixed Provincial Finals!

April 4, 2009 - Team Tom Wharry has made it to the Mixed Provincials finals! The finished in the B1 position after a fantastic 6 wins and 1 loss record in the round-robin, they played Phil Lemay in the semi-final. Despite a slow start to the game, Tom managed to get out to a 4-2 lead after 5 ends. The 2nd half proved to be too much for Lemay to handle as Tom and team executed several great shots to put the pressure on Lemay and Team Wharry won the game 7-4, running Lemay out of rocks in the 10th end.

During the week, Tom played with Cathy Derick, Derek Lockwood and Jenn Doyle. Cathy was not able to play the final weekend, so in came Joelle Belley to take her spot, and they didn't miss a beat!

If you're interested in going to watch, Team Wharry will play at 2:00pm Sunday April 5th in Sorel-Tracy against the winner of Lemay vs Hebert. It's only about an hour from Montreal! Let's show them some Glenmore support!

Kurling for Kids 2009 - $163,520 raised!!!

Kurling for Kids took place on Saturday March 28th, and what a day it was!

Over 500 curlers at 9 curling clubs (10 with Royal Mtl taking place next week) took part in the curling day, and raising funds for much needed medical equipment.

With corporate sponsors and donations from you, friends, and family, Kurling for Kids raised over $140,000 on Saturday!!! This is an amazing total.

With one club to play next week, and just about three weeks to go until the April 17th draw, we have a great chance at surpassing the goal we set this year of $175,000.

Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen.

The children at Montreal Children's and Hopital Ste Justine thank you.

Glenmore Teams Make Mixed Provincials!

Congrats to the three Glenmore teams who qualified for Mixed Provincials in Sorel-Tracy from March 30 to April 5th.

MIKE CARSON WINS THE MASTERS PROVINCIALS

Congratulations to the team of Mike Carson for capturing the Masters Provincial title this past week at Pointe-Claire. Curling with Mac Baines, Bruce Lerner, Bill Ellyett, and 5th Karl Murovic, they captured the title over Dave Martin of Baie D'Urfe, with Glenmore's Greg Sleno, in a tightly contested final.

This makes a 2nd provincial title this year for Mike Carson, who also captured the Senior Men's title.

Mike has quite a bit of curling to do in the next couple of weeks!

Mike Carson wins Senior Men's Provincial Title

Congrats to Glenmore's Mike Carson for winning the Senior Men's Provincial title! Curling with his team out of Valleyfield, Mike beat out some big competition in Buckingham this past week. Way to go Mike! They will represent Quebec at the nationals in March.

Lakeshore Results - Team Fong wins the 'A'

Congrats to Team Fong - Stan Fong, Archie Manavian, Laura Thomas, and Louis St Laurent (with 5th Jenn Doyle) for winning the 'A' division of the Lakeshore Bonspiel!

Congrats also to Team Gurman - John Gurman, Bob Griffith, Dickie Young, and Wanda Edwards for winning the 'B' division! Way to go!

Congrats to Team Davies - Allan, Lisa and Alison Davies, along with Meaghan Hamelin for winning the 'B' consolation final! Great going!

Congrats also to Team Fournier - Gerry Fournier, Jean-Marie Gauthier, Marcel Gravel and Andre Gravel for being a finalist in the 'D' division...I think.

Martin Roy - Men's provincials

Just to send out a congrats to Martin Roy and his men's team for qualifying B3 at the men's provincials this past week at Valleyfield. He and his team finished with a record of 5-4, good for a 4-way tie for 3rd place. Martin went on to win both his tiebreaker games and finished B3. He then played Guy Hemmings in the quarter-final and lost the game in an extra end!

A great showing for Martin! Congrats!

Quebec Challenge Cup

This is an urgent call for 8 guys to outcurl Cornwall curling club this Sunday February 15, 4pm. Cornwall is defending their title for the Quebec Challenge Cup. The format is the same as the Governor Generals. Two teams, 10 ends, total playing points. It's the oldest continually competed-for trophy in North America (1850) and Glenmore gets to play about every seven years.

Provincial news:

Congrats to Martin Roy for winning the Last Chance held this past weekend in Longue Pointe. Martin secured the last spot for the men's provincials to be held in Valleyfield Feb 8 to 15.

Congrats also to senior men's team from Glenmore of Daniel Gilbert, Gordon Cole, Sabin Daigle, and Brian Scott for qualifying A1 for senior provincials! Way to go! There's two more spots up for grabs, and several Glenmore teams still have shots at making it.

Congrats also to Joelle Belley, who with her ladies team finished 4th last week at the Women's Provinicials held in Trois Rivieres. A great showing, and can boast the fact that they were the only team to beat the champions Marie France Larouche during the week.

Congrats also to Agnes Lanthier, who finished just out of a tie-breaker spot at the women's provincials when Team Brassard beat out Larouche in the last game of the round robin.

Way to go Glenmore curlers!

Event took place Jan 18 @ Baie D'Urfe - points spiel & we won by about 10 pts.
Longue Pointe came 2nd.

The other Glenmore team taking part was Andrea White, Joceline Malric (Anderson), Wanda Edwards, and Marie-Claude Asselin. They unfortunately lost their first game, but came back with a resounding win in their 2nd game.

Way to go ladies!

"Just wanted to let the proud members of Glenmore know that the girls team Lisa Davies and Allison Davies and Meaghan Hamelin and Kelly Ryan are off the provincials . Winning Montreal 3.
I am so proud of them winning because these girls are Juvenile level and competing in a junior level. Also I wanted to thank Greg and Lee Sleno and Benoit Forget and Lise Carson for coming out yesterday and supporting the girls. It is so nice to see that they have your support.

Curling Quebec Caravan Clinic Update

Due to scheduling problems, we will not be hosting Curling Quebec Caravan with Guy Hemmings this year.
For those of you still interested in fine tuning your game, we will be offering an Intermediate Clinic, in the same format as in past years.
Saturday, November 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, our level 2 instructors will be on hand to answer your questions on a one-on-one basis.
